Dual Element Water Heaters: The Good and the Bad

Dual Element Water Heaters: The Good and the Bad

When it comes to the technology of water heaters, it has improved drastically over the last couple of years. If you’ve been looking to upgrade or replace your current water heater and you’re not sure which route to go – tankless or dual-element, you can always call on the team here at Mr. Rooter Plumbing.
Dual-element water heaters use two heating elements instead of one – one top and one bottom. This water heater has a built-in thermostat, but only one of the elements is running at one time. To start the warming process, the top element turns on. Once the water reaches the temperature it’s set at, the top element shuts off and the bottom ones turn on to heat the rest of the water.
If you’re located in the Ohio Valley area and considering a dual-element water heater, you’ve come to the right place! When it comes to the new kinds of water heaters, most people think of tankless water heaters, but dual-element heaters are just as new and just as efficient. But like most things, there are some good things and there are some bad things about them. Let’s dive in…

Pros
Since a dual-element water heater has a top element and a bottom element and only one element runs at a time, they are much more efficient than any other kind of water heater. The water goes through both elements, and each element takes its turn to heat the water as it goes through. Since this type of water heater is more energy-efficient, it decreases the electricity it uses each month, lower your monthly energy bills, and this results in leaving less of a carbon footprint behind. Lastly, because water goes through two different ‘chambers’, your water will warm up quicker and you’ll notice your hot water lasts longer and is more consistent.

Cons
Like any type of plumbing appliance, there are some downsides to choosing a dual-element water heater. Unlike single-element water heaters, dual-element ones are harder to maintain and get serviced because they are a newer way to heat your water. Another issue people run into when it comes to dual-element water heaters is that the parts for them aren’t interchangeable, meaning there are different replacement parts for each element of this water heater – don’t worry though, Mr. Rooter Plumbing is always here if you need advice about your dual-element water heater!
